PRAYER IN THE BOOK OF REVELATION

Vatican City, 5 September 2012 (VIS) - Benedict XVI today resumed his general audiences in the Vatican, having held them at Castelgandolfo during the month of August. Meeting with faithful in the Paul VI Hall he turned his attention to prayer in the Book of Revelation which, he explained, "presents us with the living breathing prayer of the Christian assembly, gathered together 'on the Lord's day'".

Revelation, Pope Benedict went on, "is a difficult book, but one of great richness. ... In it a reader presents the assembly with a message entrusted by God to John the Evangelist. ... From the dialogue between them a symphony of prayer arises which is then developed in many different forms up until the conclusion".

The first part of Revelation presents us with the assembly in prayer in three successive phases. The first of these highlights how "prayer is, above all, a listening to God Who speaks. Engulfed as we are by so many words we are little used to listening, and especially to adopting an interior and exterior attitude of silence so as to attend to what the Lord wishes to say to us. These verses also teach us that our prayers, often merely prayers of request, must in fact be first and foremost prayers of praise to God for His love, for the gift of Jesus Christ which brought us strength, hope and salvation. ... God, Who reveals Himself as the beginning and the end of the story, welcomes and takes to heart the assembly's request".

This first phase also includes another important element. "Constant prayer revives in us a sense of the Lord's presence in our life and history. His presence supports us, guides us and gives us great hope. ... Prayer, even that pronounced in the most extreme solitude, is never a form of isolation and it is never sterile, it is a vital lymph which nourishes an increasingly committed and coherent Christian existence".

In the second phase of the prayer of the assembly "the relationship with Jesus Christ is developed further. The Lord makes Himself visible, He speaks and acts, and the community, increasingly close to Him, listens, reacts and accepts".

In the third phase "the Church in prayer, accepting the word of the Lord, is transformed. ... The assembly listens to the message, and receives a stimulus for repentance, conversion, perseverance, growth in love and guidance for the journey".

"The Revelation", Benedict XVI concluded, "presents us with a community gathered in prayer, because it is in prayer that we gain an increasing awareness of Jesus' presence with us and within us. The more and the better we prayer with constancy and intensity, the more we are assimilated to Him, and the more He enters into our lives to guide them and give them joy and peace. And the more we know, love and follow Jesus, the more we feel the need to dwell in prayer with Him, receiving serenity, hope and strength for our lives".

IRREPLACEABLE ROLE OF THE LAY FAITHFUL IN MAKING AFRICA THE CONTINENT OF HOPE

Vatican City, 5 September 2012 (VIS) - Africa is called to be the "continent of hope" says Benedict XVI in a letter written to Cardinal Stanislaw Rylko, president of the Pontifical Council for the Laity, for the occasion of the Pan African Congress for Catholic Laity. The congress is taking place in Yaounde, Cameroon, from 4 to 9 September on the theme: "Being witnesses of Jesus Christ in Africa today. 'Salt of the earth ... light of the World".

Hope, the Holy Father writes, "indicates the bright horizon which opens up before the eyes of faith" despite the many spiritual and material problems facing the African continent and the African Church. "Even the best traditional values of African culture are today threatened by secularisation, which gives rise to disorientation, rends the fibre of personal and social life, exacerbates tribalism, violence and corruption in public life, leads to the humiliation and exploitation of women and children, and increases poverty and hunger. To this must be added the threat of fundamentalist terrorism which has recently targeted Christian communities in a number of African countries".

In spite of all this, the people of Africa possess "a great wealth of spiritual resources, which are very valuable in our time: love for life and the family, a sense of joy and of sharing, enthusiasm in living their faith in the Lord. ... Never let the dark mentality of relativism and nihilism, which affects various parts of your world, open a breach in your lives", the Pope says. "With renewed energy accept and spread the message of joy and of hope which Christ brings, a message capable of purifying and strengthening the great values of your culture. ... Making Africa the 'continent of hope' must be the goal that guides the mission of African lay faithful today, just as it must guide the congress you are celebrating".

This mission "arises from the faith, a gift of God which must be welcomed, nourished and developed, because 'we cannot accept that salt should become tasteless or the light be kept hidden'. ... In this transformation of all society, which is so urgent for Africa today, the lay faithful have an irreplaceable role to play. ... Women and men, young and old, children, families and all of society: today all of Africa awaits the 'ambassadors' of the Good News". These ambassadors are "the lay faithful in parishes, ... ecclesial movements and new communities, enamoured of Christ and the Church, full of joy and gratitude for the Baptism they have received, courageous workers for peace and announcers of authentic hope".

MESSAGE OF THE POPE FOR THE FUNERAL OF CARDINAL MARTINI

Vatican City, 4 September 2012 (VIS) - The Pope has sent a message to the archdiocese of Milan, the Society of Jesus, the relatives of Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini, and "all those who loved and esteemed (him) and have chosen to accompany him on his final journey". The message was read out during the funeral of the late cardinal, archbishop emeritus of Milan, Italy, by Cardinal Angelo Comastri, the Pope's special envoy to the event.

"'Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light for my path'. The Psalmist's words encapsulate the entire existence of this generous and faithful pastor of the Church. He lived as a man of God, who not only studied Sacred Scripture but loved it intensely, making it the light of his life that all things might be 'ad maiorem Dei gloriam', for the greater glory of God. It was for this reason that he was able to teach believers and seekers after truth that the only word worthy to listen to, accept and follow is that of God, because it leads everyone along the path of truth and love. He lived with great openness of heart, never rejecting encounter and dialogue with anyone, and giving a concrete response to the Apostle’s invitation always 'to be ready to give an explanation to anyone who asks you for a reason for your hope'. He lived with a spirit of profound pastoral charity, in keeping with his own episcopal motto of 'Pro veritate adversa diligere', attentive to all situations especially the most difficult, and lovingly close to the lost, the poor and the suffering".

"May the Lord, who guided Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini throughout his life, receive this tireless servant of the Gospel and of the Church in the heavenly Jerusalem".

CLOSURE OF THE SUMMER SEMINAR OF THE RATZINGER SCHULEKREIS

Vatican City, 3 September 2012 (VIS) - The traditional summer seminar of former students of Benedict XVI (the "Ratzinger Schulekreis") came to a close yesterday morning with a Mass celebrated by the Holy Father at the Mariapoli Centre in Castelgandolfo. This year's seminar has been examining the theme of: "Ecumenical outcomes and questions in the dialogue with Lutheranism and Anglicanism".

The Pope began his homily, Vatican Radio reports, with an analysis of a passage from Deuteronomy, recalling how Israel received God's Law which brings authentic wisdom. This is a gift, the Holy Father explained, in which to take joy, it is not the result of some individual genius. The Church, which he described as "a universal Israel", must only take joy at the gift of Christ, which is the essential nucleus of the Law, the Law made flesh, God's Love for us. We have received the wisdom which is truth, we know how to live and to die because Christ is life and truth. There is no room for triumphalism of any kind, but only for joy and gratitude at the gift we have received, a gift we did not create".

THE POPE WARNS AGAINST THE DANGER OF FALSE RELIGIOSITY

Vatican City, 3 September 2012 (VIS) - The Law of God, which finds complete fulfilment in love, provided the theme for Benedict XVI's remarks before praying the Angelus today with faithful gathered in the inner courtyard of the Apostolic Palace at Castelgandolfo.

Commenting on today's reading from the Gospel of St. Mark, in which the Pharisees reproach Jesus' disciples for not following the norms of Mosaic Law, the Pope explained that God's Law "is His Word, which guides mankind along the path of life, freeing them from the slavery of selfishness and introducing them into the 'land' of authentic freedom and life. It is for this reason that, in the Bible, the Law is not seen as a burden, ... but as the Lord's most precious gift, ... (an expression of) His desire to remain alongside His people, and to be their Ally".

Yet when the people settle in the Promised Land and become the depositories of the Law, they are tempted "to place their safety and their happiness in something which is no longer the Word of the Lord: in material goods and in power, other 'divinities' which are, in fact, empty and futile idols. Of course, the Law of God remains, but it is no longer so important, no longer the rule of life; rather it becomes a facade, a covering, while life follows other paths, other rules, often selfish individual and group interests. In this way religion loses its authentic meaning ... and is reduced to a secondary habit which satisfies the need human beings have to feel they have done right before God".

"This is a serious risk in every religion, one which Jesus encountered in His own time, and unfortunately it can also arise in Christianity. Thus Jesus' words in today's Gospel against the Scribes and Pharisees must make us think. Jesus repeats the words of Isaiah: 'This people honours me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me; in vain do they worship me, teaching human precepts as doctrine'. ... In his Letter, the Apostle James also warns against the danger of false religiosity", the Holy Father concluded.

After praying the Angelus, Benedict XVI greeted, among others, a group of pilgrims from Lebanon, expressing his delight at the prospect of his forthcoming visit to that country.

Vatican City, 1 September 2012 (VIS) - Pope Benedict's general prayer intention for September is: "That politicians may always act with honesty, integrity, and love for the truth".

His mission intention is: "That Christian communities may have a growing willingness to send missionaries, priests, and lay people, along with concrete resources, to the poorest Churches".

CARDINAL MARTINI: FAITHFUL SERVANT AND DISTINGUISHED PASTOR

Vatican City, 1 September 2012 (VIS) - Today Benedict XVI sent a telegram of condolence to Cardinal Angelo Scola, Archbishop of Milan, Italy, on the death yesterday of Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini, S.J., archbishop emeritus of that diocese, at 85 years of age.

"I received with sorrow", the Pope writes, "news of the death of Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini, after a long illness that he lived with serenity of spirit and complete trust in the Lord's will. I wish to express, both to the diocesan community as well as the family members of the lamented cardinal, my deepest sharing in their sorrow, recalling affectionately this beloved brother who so generously served the Gospel and the Church. I recall with gratitude his intense apostolic work extended as religious dedication, this spiritual son of St. Ignatius, experienced teacher, accredited Biblicist, and appreciated rector of the Pontifical Gregorian University and the Pontifical Biblical Institute as well as caring and wise archbishop of this Ambrosian archdiocese. Also brought to mind is his competent and fervent service given to the Word of God, opening the treasures of Sacred Scripture more and more to the ecclesial community, especially through his promotion of 'lectio divina'. I lift fervent prayers to the Lord that, through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, He may welcome this faithful servant and distinguished pastor to the heavenly Jerusalem and I wholeheartedly impart the consolations of apostolic blessing to all those who mourn his loss".

Likewise, Cardinal Secretary of State Tarcisio Bertone sent a telegram to Cardinal Scola expressing, in his name, in that of the secretariat of state, and in that of the entire Roman Curia, deepest condolences on the death of the cardinal who "witnessed and taught the primacy of the spiritual life and, at the same time, the attentive listening to the human being in its various existential and social conditions". Contemplation and action: Pope reflects on example of St. Dominic : News Headlines - Catholic Culture

The following excerpts are from Catholic Culture's Catholic World News:
  • Pope Benedict XVI continued his weekly talks on the “School of Prayer” during his public audience on August 8. Noting that the day was the feast of St. Dominic, the Holy Father devoted most of his remarks to the prayer life of the Dominican founder.
  • St. Dominic, the Pope said, embodied “the harmonious integration of contemplation of the divine mysteries and apostolic activity.” From a deep life of prayer he drew the strength to continue his enormously productive preaching and ministry.

Pope Benedict challenges believers to put God before worldly cares

The following excerpts are from Herald Malaysia Online:
  • God's promise of a new and eternal life deserves priority over earthly desires for things that can never satisfy the heart, Pope Benedict XVI taught in his Aug. 5 Sunday Angelus address at Castel Gandolfo.
  • “Jesus wants to help people move beyond the immediate satisfaction of their material needs, although they are important too. He wants to open a horizon of existence which is not simply that of the daily concerns of eating, dressing and career,” the Pope told pilgrims at his summer residence.
  • The true “center of existence,” giving “full meaning and firm hope” to life, “is faith in Jesus … our encounter with Christ,” the Pope reflected.
  • Thousands of enthusiastic visitors listened from the courtyard of the Apostolic Palace as the Pope discussed Sunday's reading from the “Bread of Life” discourse in the Gospel of John.

The Pope Strikes a Blow for San Francisco - Terry Jeffrey - Page 1

The following excerpt is from an article by Terry Jeffrey on Townhall.com:
  • To find the heart of San Francisco, you need to head south of Market Street, not to the Castro District teeming with people who very publicly define themselves by the perverse acts in which they engage, but to the Mission District.
  • Here is where the most beautiful of American cities was founded -- not by 49ers, beatniks, hippies or homosexuals, but by devout and dedicated Spanish Franciscans who crossed half the world to bring their faith to a new land.
  • Mission Dolores is not just the heart of San Francisco, she symbolizes its soul. The Franciscans founded the mission on June 29, 1776, just as American patriots on the other side of the continent were preparing to declare their independence from England with a document that said all men are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights.
